CORNERSTONE RESIDENCE

Tucked into the slope between a dense aspen forest and an open meadow dotted with scrub oak, this high-elevation site at 9,500 feet offers panoramic views of the West Elks, Cimarron, and San Juan mountain ranges. The Cornerstone Club golf course unfolds in the foreground, while a mosaic of pinion, juniper, and ponderosa woodlands blend with aspen groves in the midground, creating a layered and immersive natural backdrop.

Design decisions were shaped by both ecological sensitivity and the site's alpine character. Wildfire risk and resilience were key considerations in plant selection, layout, and materials. The planting palette draws inspiration from the land’s ranching history, particularly its reputation for vibrant wildflower meadows. Native wildflowers are interwoven with native grasses to create a dynamic, seasonal landscape that honors the site’s legacy while supporting long-term ecological health and fire management goals.

The exterior spaces are designed to be flexible and seasonal, offering year-round access to the outdoors. In summer, they provide a quiet retreat immersed in the high-elevation meadow. In winter, the home becomes a jumping-off point to the club’s Nordic ski trails and snowshoe paths. The result is a high-country retreat that feels deeply connected to its place, grounded in both history and stewardship.
