RICHMOND BEACH
This contemporary home and landscape is designed in layers to balance structure, softness, and a sense of place. From top to bottom, it’s a journey through space, texture and light, framed by the expansive views over Puget Sound to the Olympic Mountains beyond. Each layer carefully terraced down this steep Seattle site, with the house perched just below the top like a quiet lookout. A minimalist front entry sets a calm tone, giving way to a cantilevered patio at the back that floats above a hillside of breezy grasses. Below, a mid-level lawn and cut flower garden offer space to gather informally and at the base, the landscape softens to a natural meadow where the design gives way to the wild.
From the very beginning, the clients emphasized the importance of journey and storytelling—through each outdoor space, through the design process, and through the changing seasons. This idea became a guiding principle in every design decision, shaping not just the physical layout but the emotional experience of the site. In this project, the process itself was as meaningful as the outcome—a layered narrative that continues to unfold with time.
