WASATCH COURTYARD
Nestled into the foothills of Salt Lake City's Wasatch Hollow neighborhood, this urban infill residence transforms a long, narrow, and steeply sloped lot into a layered series of outdoor living spaces that balance privacy, light, and spatial efficiency. The site’s topography posed both challenge and opportunity—calling for a design that carefully steps with the land while carving out a variety of experiences across a compact footprint.

At the heart of the architectural design is a small courtyard that anchors the house and landscape, creating a quiet moment visible from nearly every interior room. Moving outward, the backyard unfolds into a series of outdoor rooms which include a hot tub and sauna terrace, a dining area, firepit seating, terraced planting, and a small lawn—all tucked into the hillside to create a sense of comfort and enclosure.

Perched above the home, two roof decks are immersed in the surrounding tree canopy, offering a quiet connection to the landscape beyond the property. Framed by mature trees and open to the sky, these spaces feel elevated and expansive—an airy counterpart to the more grounded and sheltered areas of the site. These decks extend the living experience upward, providing a peaceful retreat that feels both integrated with and distinct from the rest of the landscape.

Throughout the site, thoughtful grading and spatial layering respond directly to the site's constraints—turning limitations into a rich, multi-dimensional living environment.
